JELSTUDIO's "AL" (Auto Loudness) family

An automatic perceived-loudness normalizer for LIVE and OFFLINE use

JELSTUDIO's "AL 1" (Auto Loudness, LIVE)

LIVE use.

AL will automatically and continuously adjust audio-gain to maintain a similar overall perceived-loudness of the audio going through it.

AL has 18 different methods of adjusting loudness.

Technically it is a 32/64 bit VST2 audio-effect plugin mainly for use in a LIVE VST-host (for example with LIVE stage-performance audio, or with music/TV home-stereo audio), but it can also be used in DAWs and sound/video-editors on Windows.

A few ideas of what AL can be used for: to balance dialog and sound-effects when watching movies, to avoid loud commercials when watching TV-shows, to balance loudness between songs when listening to music. It can also be used on LIVE internet-broadcasts.

VST plugin

JELSTUDIO's "AL 12" (Auto Loudness, High quality music)

OFFLINE use.

AL 12 sounds more musically transparent than AL1, but uses a half-second latency to achieve this.

AL 12 has 18 different methods of adjusting loudness (Not the same as in AL 1, but tuned for more transparency)

Technically it is a 32/64 bit VST2 audio-effect plugin for use in a LIVE VST-host with music home-stereo audio, or in DAWs and sound/video-editors on Windows for offline rendering/exporting of audio.

A few ideas of what AL can be used for: to balance dialogue and sound-effects in movie-soundtracks, to balance varied material in podcasts, DJ-mixes or compiled radio/TV-programs, to balance loudness between songs when listening to music. It can also be used on LIVE internet-broadcasts where the half-second latency is acceptable.

VST plugin

JELSTUDIO's "AL dialnorm" (Auto Loudness, dialogue and speech)

OFFLINE use.

AL will automatically and continuously adjust audio-gain to maintain a similar overall dialnorm-loudness (-27 LUFS/LKFS) of the audio going through it.

AL dialnorm has 5 different methods of adjusting the speech-track.

Technically it is a 32/64 bit VST2 audio-effect plugin mainly for use in a LIVE VST-host (for example with LIVE stage-performance audio, or with music/TV home-stereo audio), but it can also be used in DAWs and sound/video-editors on Windows.

A few ideas of what AL can be used for: to balance dialog for movie, television or radio work, Anything speech-related.

Some of Al's key-points:

AL 1

  • Runaway volume peaks are clipped at -0.1 dB FS

  • Zero latency (for LIVE use or for tracking)

  • Inspired by "Recommendation ITU-R BS.1864-0" (See manual for more info)

  • Inspired by "Recommendation ITU-R BS.1770-4" (See manual for more info)

  • Can handle incoming audio-signals that has 'overs' (internally handles signals hotter than 0 dB FS, either real peaks or ISPs)

  • Works on mono and stereo signals.

  • GUI layout is optimized for ’peripheral vision overview’ (when looking at the center of the GUI; all important displays can be read at a glance with peripheral vision)

AL 12

  • Audio-chain sample-peak overload protection (Max output is 0 dB FS unweighted)

  • Half a second latency (Plugin has delay compensation, so can be used in multi-track environments)

  • Inspired by "Recommendation ITU-R BS.1864-0" (See manual for more info)

  • Inspired by "Recommendation ITU-R BS.1770-4" (See manual for more info)

  • Has 1 loudness-algorithm (JELSTUDIO’s own based on the “Advanced Television Systems Committee standard A/85”)

  • Can handle incoming audio-signals that has 'overs' without clipping (Internally the plugin can operate with sample-peak values up to about +10 dB FS)

  • Works on mono and stereo signals.

  • GUI layout is optimized for ’peripheral vision overview’ (when looking at the center of the GUI; all important displays can be read at a glance with peripheral vision) based on aviation-safety studies.

AL dialnorm

  • Audio-chain sample-peak overload protection (Max output is 0 dB FS unweighted)

  • Quarter of a second latency (Plugin has delay compensation, so can be used in multi-track environments)

  • Inspired by "Recommendation ITU-R BS.1864-0" (See manual for more info)

  • Inspired by "Recommendation ITU-R BS.1770-4" (See manual for more info)

  • Has 1 loudness-algorithm (JELSTUDIO’s own mode, based on the “Advanced Television Systems Committee standard A/85” but modified for automation)

  • Can handle incoming audio-signals that has 'overs' without clipping (Internally the plugin can operate with sample-peak values up to about +10 dB FS)

  • Works on mono and stereo signals with loudness-compliant panning.

  • Employs soft-rolloff band-pass filter (full pass-through of audio above 100 Hz and below 10,000 Hz, with soft roll-off outside those frequencies)

  • GUI layout is optimized for ’peripheral vision overview’ (when looking at the center of the GUI; all important displays can be read at a glance with peripheral vision) based on aviation-safety studies.

The downloaded VST-dll file must be manually copied to your VST plugin folder of choice. There is no auto-installer and no registry-changes. To un-install plugin; simply delete it.

The download contains both the demo-version and the full paid-version in the same download.

When you buy a license you get a password to unlock the 7z compressed file containing the paid-version.

The demo-version is exactly the same as the full paid-version, except it briefly cuts the sound once every minute*
*Note that the demo-version can still be tested in multi-track sessions, as multiple instances of the plugin will cut-out sound at the same time.

PURCHASE (includes all 3 AL versions): https://sites.fastspring.com/jelstudio/instant/autoloudness

Sale is handled via fastspring.com (you can see your options when clicking purchase link above)

Please make sure you have thoroughly tested that the demo runs on your computer without issues before making a purchase!

What you buy is a user-license (in the form of the password needed to unlock the full version in the download file to the left)

Think of this user-license as if it was a piece of physical hardware you purchased (a device or machine, like a tape-recorder or mixing-desk, whether it is for your personal use or for use by employees in your company or students in your institution. You can copy it to your various personal computers as long as it is within common sense of fair-use)

The email you receive after purchase is your proof-of-purchase.

Alternative/Experimental versions:
Special experimental versions of AL that may or may not be useful.

JELSTUDIO_AutoLoudness(AL_LatencyX)_(20181115_windows7-10,x86,x64,VST2,Demo,Full).zip
This is the same as 'AL 1' but with a short lookahead, causing a short delay between input and output, which may improve the general sound while still being fast enough for LIVE-use with television-viewing.
